Vernon’s Bar has just opened in the heart of Summer Hill (another Inner West win!). Vernon’s Bar is an innovative new concept by the owners of Summer Hill favourite One Penny Red, Nina, David and RJ. Located upstairs above the restaurant in the beautiful heritage listed venue (formerly the old post office designed Walter Liberty Vernon- Hence the name), Vernon’s Bar is a lively addition to the already celebrated One Penny Red restaurant. “We are passionate about creating an environment for people in the Inner West and beyond that encompasses everything a good bar should, without all the airs and graces.” Says Nina, David and RJ.

The bar’s beverage menu features inventive twists on classic cocktails, including the Willy Chapman, a blend of sloe gin, apricot and Prosecco; the Shiso Sour – nikka, shiso leaf and absinthe (not for the faint-hearted) and my personal favourite, the delicious and little too easy to drink Basil Gimlet which features vodka, basil and elderflower blended and served straight up in a basil garnished martini glass.

The bar also boasts a food menu of modern seasonal dishes with an added dash of Chef RJ’s (formerly of Longrain) signature flair. Dishes include hiramasa kingfish crudos with ruby grapefruit, cucumber and horseradish and a chestnut, Jerusalem artichoke and Portobello pie and staff favourite – Vernon’s fried chicken wing dings with miniature sauce while vegetarians can enjoy the delicious Falafel Board.

From village post office to trendy bar and eatery, Vernon’s Bar interiors were designed in-house by co-owner Nina Alidenes. The space offers 60 indoor and outdoor seats (on the balcony), including a private dining room complete with an impressive floor-to-ceiling wine rack (I need one of this at my house!). Paying homage to the building’s heritage, the space has a contemporary yet classic feel. With leather banquettes and mood lighting, Vernon’s Bar sets the perfect backdrop for a quick aperitif or extended catch up with friends over a few wines, which have been handpicked by sommelier and co-owner David.
