What’s on: Grandmaster Flash in the Flesh at the Soda Factory

20130314-223313.jpg

When: Friday March 22nd, 9pm-5am
Cost: $20 (on the door)

He’s the daddy of DJ culture, the ultimate decknician, the grand master himself, and he’s coming to Surry Hills’ tightest new hotspot, the Soda Factory, on Friday 22nd March.

Soda Factory Venue Shots-56

Grandmaster Flash has been killin’ it since ’74, and is still regarded one of the greatest DJs of all time. So dust off your platforms and don’t miss your chance to catch Flash in the flesh in the intimate, vintage surrounds of the Soda Factory.

Less than a month since opening their doors, The Soda Factory is fast becoming the watering hole of choice for hot bands and celebs alike. Just recently, hit makers Bloc Party were seen kicking back behind the coke machine. With sweet old school tunes, delish dogs and killer cocktails it’s no wonder the likes of Kele, A-Trak and the other cool kids come to hang… must be something in the bubbles…

Speaking of cool kids, the Soda Factory is stoked to announce an additional ‘secret’ show for Electric Empire after the overwhelming response to last night’s gig. The indie roots band will perform this special encore show tonight, Friday 15th March. With no door charge, we suggest you take your dollars straight to the bar for a Choc Passion Martini instead.

SOCIAL SPY** THE SODA FACTORY LAUNCHES INTO SURRY HILLS

16 Wentworth Ave, Surry Hills

For those in the know, last night saw Sydney’s music industry heavyweights, actors, artists and more arrive in droves for the opening of Surry Hills’ newest late-night sweet spot, The Soda Factory.

The Soda Factory Launch - Crowd Pics-11

From the outside, onlookers questioned why there was a queue on Wentworth Ave for entry to a hot-dog joint. Those with a keen eye though, would have spied celebrities slipping behind a 1950’s coke machine and not remerging until hours later, faces flushed and wearing smiles. Sydney Social 101 LOVES this!!!!

The Soda Factory_DSC6388

The Soda Factory_DSC6361

Thirsty Mirc frontman Rai Thistlethwayte, Triple J breakfast presenter, Alex Dyson and the god father of music himself Michael Chugg were just a few of the music industry faces out in support of the night.

Channel V presenter Marty Smiley and Actress Sarah Snook were seen cutting up the dance floor while New York’s DJ SPINNA worked the decks. And Masterchef winner Andy Allen and Puberty Blues actress Charlotte Best kicked back on the make-shift crate booths sipping cocktails.

Scott Tweedie, Renee Brack, Nacho Pop, Casey Burgess, Akos Armont, Nick Westaway and Dominic Allburn were also amongst the crowd.

Soda Factory Socials-3

Guests had the chance to sample drinks from the menu designed by mixologist Mitchell Warters, straight from London. He’s spent the last two years perfecting the art of the delicious drop at Richard Branson’s exclusive members-only Roof Gardens cocktail bar on High Street, LDN.

Soda Factory Socials-16

But rather than a traditional serving of spirits and classic cocktails, Warters has created some unique and exciting signature drinks to complement the old school atmosphere. The Chocolate Passion Martini: rich blend of dark chocolate and lush passionfruit was a real crowd pleaser. The Sailers Mule was cinnamon and bitters infused and served with a cute red and white milk-bar straw while the Sweet Gal’s Blush was a fruity mix of strawberries and kiwifruit.

To tie in with the hot-dog restaurant entry, food on the night consisted of gourmet dogs and sides of Mac & Cheese. The Hotdogs on offer included: The Texas Redneck – Classic Frankfurter Sausage, Smoked Chilli, Cheese, Texas BBQ Sauce, The Johnny Drama – Beef Sausage Bacon, Sour Cream, Avocado, Tomato Salsa, and The Buffalo Bill Chicken Dog -Battered Chicken Sausage, Buffalo Chicken Sauce, Cheese.

Bar owner Graham Cordery said the night was a huge success “We’ve had an incredible first night and the response has been overwhelming. People have been craving something different from Surry Hills for a while now and where excited to be able to offer them both a not so small bar and music venue all in one.”

THE SODA FACTORY BRINGS A HIP LATE NIGHT TO SURRY HILLS

20130205-234111.jpg

Hey sweetheart, now that this old dive is closing up… I know of a swingin’ new place. Some guy told me about it a few days ago, he said it was a hip honky-tonk with it’s door all hidden up behind one of them hot dog joints? And the hot dogs aren’t half bad either, he says – anyway, whaddaya say sweetheart? I’ll buy you a gin soda, take you for a dance…

It’s a warm midnight and the pavement is slick from a passing summer shower. The lights have gone up and it’s time to move on, but this ol’ suburb has been kicking off its heels and crawling in to bed or wandering further abroad… up until now.

A phoney fifties’ coke machine makes a secret entrance to a space you’d never expect: welcome to The Soda Factory, Surry Hills’ newest late-night sweet spot. They’ve stripped out the Mars Lounge, Tone and all that fleshy interior to present the stunning industrial bones of this beautiful old building, and there’s a top-notch cocktail menu to match.

And with it’s late-trading license, The Soda Factory will have the tunes sorted. Expect a regular offering of live acts, international DJ’s & local vibe controllers to engineer your nights from chill in the early evening to some sweet, sweet d-floor action later on, expect to leave early… if you know what we mean.

Bar owner and Experience Entertainment Director, Graham Cordery says, “Surry Hills is one of the most diverse and trendy suburbs in the world, but when it comes to late night offerings, there’s been something missing.”

He knows how to make a place work, too: with Experience Entertainment at the helm of ivy’s weekly shindigs for the last 2.5 years and bringing home AHA’s Best Entertainment Venue two years in a row, his standards for a good night out are understandably pretty darn high.

“Just like Surry Hills, there’s going to be a little bit of something for everyone when we open our doors.”

Joining Cordery’s wealth of experience in the electronic music scene, partner Michael Chase brings a world of experience in live music acts to the table, mastering the delicate confluence of old-school classics and contemporary beats, from Buddy Holly to Dangermouse. Chase’s background at MGM Distribution paints a picture of one of the most well-respected names in the music industry – and with that clout comes some serious pulling power.

Aside from big names, early evening punters might be treated to some select live sets. “The live music component will also try to support some of the best up-and-coming and indie talents out there,” Chase explains. “Earlier in the night or mid-week nights we’d love to get some great acoustic sets on.”

At this bar & music venue, the stage will find itself under the feet of the coolest touring bands and exclusive guest DJs. This exciting hybrid of bar & creative space boasts a first for Sydney, evoking the experience of a smoky late night New York club. That’s how you’ll find New York’s DJ SPINNA manning the decks for the launch party on Saturday 23rd February and the legendary Grandmaster Flash a few weeks later.

But don’t worry if you left your dancing shoes at home: you’ll still find a spot at the bar to suit, with a drinks menu designed by mixologist Mitchell Warters, straight from London. He’s spent the last two years perfecting the art of the delicious drop at Richard Branson’s exclusive members-only Roof Gardens cocktail bar on High Street, LDN. But rather than a traditional serving of spirits and classic cocktails, Warters will be creating some unique and exciting signature drinks for The Soda Factory to complement the old school atmosphere.

Warters’ philosophy is all about flavour-focused, accessible, unpretentious cocktails with an adventurous streak, but not too intimidating. His playful approach to cocktails includes nostalgic numbers like root beer floats with gourmet ice cream and switched out bubbles (like raspberry lemonade and vodka ice cream). The pina colada and martini get new twists, too. A focus on quality will bring you a more ‘adult’ selection of organic vodka, lychee, ruby red grapefruit and sage, or pepper tequila, basil, strawberry and cranberry juice.

The soda syphon will also make a triumphant return with a boozy makeover, serving up share cocktails of sparkling apple and rum as well as gin and lemonade and similar classic pairings. 12 classic cocktails, 12 original cocktails and late-night service: there should be no shortage of delicious dance-floor lubrication going on at this hip new bar.

For those ones in the know, The Soda Factory will offer the highest quality entertainment and beverages in a wonderfully central location, long into the night and beyond.
So whether you stop for a nightcap hot dog at Bobby’s Boss Dogs – the fast food joint that conceals this hidden gem – or pass through it as you wander out in the early morning glow, there’s a secret spot waiting for you at the bottom end of Surry Hills – but don’t just go telling everyone, alright? WHAT’S ON – Sydney 101 – Celebrate all that is Australian this Australia Day…

Whether it’s your first Aussie Day (January 26th) or if it’s your 30th, there is absolutely no reason not to get involved.

There are so many cool activities taking place across this lil’ ol’ country that we call home.

When I first arrived in Sydney four years ago on the 23rd January, I had no idea that there even was an Australia Day, no less when it was! Little did I know that it was in 3 days time, and that it would be one of the best days of my travels yet!

Back in 2009, we started at Hyde Park with a crate of Pure Blonde, then we headed to The Australian Hotel in The Rocks. We then ended our day watching the fireworks at Darling Harbour – they were spectacular!

I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of it before! So here is a little gift from me to you, to let you decide how your perfect Australia Day will be spent:

1. Bronte Beach BBQ (all day)

Avoid the hustle and bustle of the city and head to the quaint Eastern Suburbs beach between Bondi and Coogee. It is one of the few places where you’re allowed to drink in the open and it has grass, sand and BBQs to complete a relaxing day at the beach.

2. The Rocks – Glenmore and The Australian Heritage Hotel (all day)

This was suggested by one of Sydney Social 101′s Facebook fans as a ‘must-see’ for Australia Day – You can enjoy Emu and Kangaroo pizzas at The Australian, then wander a mere 20 metres to The Glenmore for spectacular Sydney Harbour views. A great option if the weather isn’t 100% as The Glenmore now has a retractable roof to ensure that rain, sun or hail, you can enjoy a schooner with a view!

3. Bondi Rocks – North Bondi (12pm til late)

If you fancy a lively day with beer, sounds and shapes, head to Bondi Rocks in North Bondi – One for all the hipsters (or wanna be) out there!

Image

4. Festival of the Voice – The Rocks (12pm – 8pm)

A great suggestions by another SS101 Facebook groupies :-) They advised their pick would be to head to The Rocks this Australia Day for a free celebration of music and song.

There is also a twilight concert with Australian artists in Dawes Point Park. Again you’ll be able to take advantage of stunning Harbour views.

There are also concerts at First Fleet Park and ‘Song Street’ (George Street). If you’re talented with regards to vocal gymnastics, you can even make sweet music on the karaoke stage in The Rocks Square.

5. Darling Harbour - Australia Day Fireworks

Like I did on my first Australia Day, join thousands of people at Cockle Bay, hear an official address from the NSW Premier and witness the grand finale of Sydney’s Australia Day celebrations—an exhilarating symphony of light, sound and pyrotechnics. Perfect if you’re looking for things to do with the family!

6. Party hard with the best of them with Keystone!

Cargo Bar, Cargo Lounge, Bungalow 8 and The Loft have a list of celebrations to suit all tastes this Australia Day here in Sydney, from 25 – 28 January!

They are all hosting a four day festival at the four iconic harbour-side venues on King Street Wharf! With over 50 different DJs and live acts, plus activities, games and more, ‘Oz Fest’ is a celebration of Australian icons with all the jam-packed excitement and entertainment of a festival! Including Minx She Can DJ tour, Sosueme DJs, Strummer & heaps more!

Sweethearts Rooftop Bar is hosting Aussie celebrations from 25 – 28th January! There will be $5 tinnies and great Aussie food ALL WEEKEND

Image

The Sugarmill will be hosting a massive Australia Day party across four floors from 10pm – Kings Cross

Image

Gazebo – 26th January from 12pm

Peter Allen Party with DJs from 4pm, celebrations from 12pm for a massive AustraliaDay Celebration.

Image

Manly Wine – 26th January from 3pm

7. Rave the night away at Pacha at The Ivy – Saturday 26 January from 6:30pm!

Now there are no doubt many events and activities I have missed out – If you have any suggestions, please post a comment below!

Hope you all have the best Australia Day ever!

Surry Hills Festival is about celebrating the colourful culture and communities of the vibrant suburb, with live music, art and entertainment for all ages. On Saturday 27 October, this day-long festival will also be choc-a-bloc with food and market stalls, with stall holders all set to peddle an exciting and affordable range of fresh produce, foods from around the world, handcrafted goods, vintage clothing and everything in between.

Surry Hills Festival

The Festival Stalls Co-Ordinator Lynda Simpson of Bazaar Marketing has been managing festival stalls for 19 years, and has re-joined the Festival this year to see its smooth transition back to the Prince Alfred Park after recent renovations. From 10am to 10pm, market and food stalls this year will transform the park into a village-like atmosphere, with great food and amazing merchandise stalls sure to delight the crowds.

Thirst Quenchers

Food stalls representing business from Sydney and surrounds will set up shop at the Prince Alfred Park, and among them are a host of healthy thirst quenchers for the day. Coco-Go-Nuts will be selling cool young coconut water, Juice Power will blitz up your choice of fresh fruits and vegetables into a vitamin-packed drink, get a healthy dose of fresh local cane juice from Noah’s Natural Cane Juice and head to The Citrus Factory, who will hit the spot with fresh lemonade, limeade, and their own pine-lime-ade mix.

Get your hit of caffeine at the cheekily-named Tantric Turtle Cafe and Groundswell Coffee Collective Byron Bay. Ice cream from Mini Melts and Serendipity will also make an appearance at the festival, when nothing but a delicious scoop of ice cream will do.

Travel around the world in food stalls

You’ll be itching for lunchtime for a chance to have a taste of the worldly offerings at the Festival. The Sauerkraut Sisters will be grilling juicy German sausages that they’ll serve up in a fresh roll and topped with home-made sauerkraut. Take a trip to the Mediterranean, starting with Master Gozleme, which will be selling a long menu of their flaky, sweet and savoury Turkish stuffed pastries. Then head over to The Mediterranean Food Bar for delicious Greek souvlaki wraps.

You don’t come across Viking food every day, so don’t miss The Gourmet Viking, who will serve up gourmet sausages (named after the Viking gods, no less), topped with homemade relishes and condiments. La Crepe Downunder will give you a taste of France with their sweet and savoury galette crepes, served to you steaming hot off the griddle. Craving something a little spicy? The Portugese Kitchen and Govinda’s Pure Vegetarian will coat your tastebuds with spicy foods and leave you wanting more.

Shop to your heart’s content

Head to the merchandise stalls once you’ve had your fill. Clothing stall including Miss Brown Vintage and Retro Boutique will be selling handpicked vintage gems, while the Surya Trading and the 3Things & Oxfam Shop stalls will display amazing handcrafted clothing from Nepal and fair trade homewares respectively.

Get ready for that perfect summer picnic and grab yourself an insulated picnic bag, picnic rug and cooler bags from Hanging Rock Picnics that may just come in handy when you’re at the Festival. Fill in the picnic basket with sweet goodies from Happy Herb Shop and Tousy’s Pick ‘N’ Mix, or even with your purchases from the market food stalls.

With sights, sounds and things to do for people of all ages and persuasions, the Festival has plenty to intrigue and delight the residents and visitors of Surry Hills in 2012. Make sure to see the full program, on our website and take your family and friends along for the colourful ride that is the Surry Hills Festival.

Surry Hills Festival is a celebration of music, art, food and culture and is an annual major fundraiser for the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre. You are invited to give a pink note donation for entry, as this annual one-day festival is brought to you by the not-for-profit organisation and they will appreciate any help you can give to keep the Surry Hills Festival happening for years to come! Funds raised will also help the Centre fund services and community development programs for the local area.

New acts added to the line-up!

For the price of a pink note – on donation at the entry to Prince Alfred Park, enjoy a line-up that would normally set you back more than a hundred dollars.

Joining the an already mega bill is the leading light of Australia’s folk and alt-country music scene, Melbourne troubadour Jordie Lane. Armed with banjos, mandolins and a lot of heart, indie-folk trio Valley of Kings will be taking the stage alongside the soulful and ethereal singer-songwriter, Jordan Leser.

Let Charlie Gradon take you to another plane with his spine-tinglingly vulnerable folk, and get dreamy with an intimate performance from Bastian Fox Phelan, featuring songs of love, fear and adventure.

Experience the unique stylings of the endearing Bity Booker, as she delicately weaves elements of folk, country and blues with her classical guitar to create a sound like no other. And for something completely different, the charismatic Johnsong will be bringing his memorable live show to Surry Hills, featuring his trademark layering of beatboxing, synth drums, live vocal samples and polished melodies to create truly infectious pop tunes.

Festival Director Matt Grant says, “We’re absolutely thrilled to be able to host such an array of incredibly talented and diverse artists this year. We’re trying to bring people an experience that you just can’t get anywhere else – and we really think we’ve done that.”

The After-party just got amped up.

To keep you going ‘til the early hours, Surry Hills has added a few party favours to the mix.

Fanny Lumsden & The Thrillseekers areon the guest-list, bringing their sunny folkabilly tunes that’s sure to get the knees-a-slappin’ and the hoedown happenin’ lickety-split. Also taking the stage are one of the best garage grass outfit in Australia, The Green Mohair Suits, ready to get a fire started under your heels. He’s a bit indie, a bit alternative, definitely electronic, and absolutely ready to get the party going – it’s Tom Ugly.

And as a cherry on top of this mighty fine line-up are the indie MUM DJs – the kids that know how to shake the party up, tip it upside down, throw some glitter on it, then really get it started.

The five-floor official after-party will be going down at the Burdekin Hotel on Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, starting at 10pm and going through until 6am.

Festival Director Matt Grant says, “The After Party is a great way for people to keep the vibe from the Festival going well into the night and with all five floors of the Burdekin open we know there will be something happening to cater for all tastes.”

Tickets for the After Party are available via Oztix or through the Surry Hills Festival website and are priced at just $20+bf.

The After Party will be the best place to continue your night once the Surry Hills Festival ends, and with proceeds going back to support the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre you can be in the right place, while giving your money to a good cause.

Absolutely jam-packed with incredible art, food, culture, as well as a stunning musical line-up, this year’s Festival is shaping up to be the greatest yet – not to mention with a ripper After-Party to boot.

The Festival runs from 10am – 10pm. Entry by donation.

DUKE BISTRO REVIEW

Sydney Social 101 was invited to review Duke Bistro on Tuesday this week, Duke Bistro has become renowned for its innovative, witty menu since opening in 2010, being awarded a hat by Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide in 2011, pretty impressive!

Suffice to say we were expecting big things! When we went upstairs it reminded me of old English pubs from back home with bottle green walls and tit bits hanging on the walls and shelves – I have to be honest is saying that it didn’t strike me as a ‘hat’ restaurant on first impressions! It has been described previously as progressive & playful in spirit, I awaited the menu with baited breath.

We were invited to sample the tasting menu, which is served every Tuesday, as we were informed that head chef Nik Hill keeps things interesting in the kitchen, where he experiments with ingredients at their very best and trailing seven new dishes each week, some of which end up on the constantly evolving menu.

It was unfortunate that on this occasion, the menu didn’t appeal to Sydney Social 101, the main dish that stood out was the Shoulder of Lamb. We decided that rather than pay $60 per head for the tasting menu, we’d order a main that left us salivating for less than half of the cost (Note: Sydney Social 101 paid full price for the meal, all views expressed are always our own and honest, irrespective of whether the food is paid for or comped).

Shoulder of Lamb

Joining Hill in the kitchen is Billy Hannigan, who worked with Hill at The Ledbury for two years. During their stint at the restaurant, it was awarded its second Michelin star (one of only five restaurants to do so in the UK) and its impressive ranking in the San Pellegrino Top 50 list. In great company and a high track record :)

Chicken Main

The food that we had was absolutely wonderful! No complaints what-so-ever! I took the liberty of taking some pictures, just to make you extra jealous! For two courses, a shared desert and a glass of wine, it was $75 – Not too bad at all!

Amazing!

Hill started his career at Bather’s Pavillion under Serge Dansereau, followed by two years at Philip Johnson’s E’cco where he was sous chef at age 21 and became a finalist in Lexus Young Chef of the Year in 2007, before starting at The Ledbury in 2008.

Duke Bistro is also one of the rare Sydney restaurants operating a late night kitchen, with food served until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Wine consultant, winemaker and sometime DJ Joel Amos is responsible for a wine list that is eclectic and adventurous with a natural empathy for the food it matches.  The varied wine list takes diners from Duke’s moody small bar and snack menu to a long matched dinner, from champagnes and sherrys to sakes, whites and reds.

Duke Bistro at The Flinders Hotel- 65 Flinders Street, Darlinghurst
