Last night Sydney Social was invited to the exclusive launch of the Ivanhoe Hotel for an exclusive sneak peek inside the local landmark.
For decades, the Ivanhoe has been a bar, restaurant, and nightclub staple on the Manly Corso, and the new transformation is truly impressive.
Lucky guests were able to witness the transformation inside, party on the outside decking, try the new sweet vodka mixers served in funky glasses and sample the mouth-watering pizza, lobster soup, burgers plus other treats off new menu too!
The first floor is inviting with plenty of cosy seating and hosts a decedent staircase. There are open areas tucked away and interesting art ties the space together. The second floor’s spacious veranda is perfect for daytime people watching and an after-hours drink. Dance floor junkies can congregate on the spacious third level dance floor, overlooked by a DJ booth.
Whilst the former Ivanhoe offered a damn fine $10 steak and plenty of locals for a game of pool, the new nautical digs, inventive cocktails and classed-up menu selection will leave you wanting to explore each of the three levels.
According to Bar MD, Grant Collins, the highly anticipated grand re-opening has left Manly locals and Sydneysiders alike, all eager to see how the renovation would take a modern approach to a classic seaside pub.
The iconic hotel, based in Manly has been closed for refurbishment and the official grand opening for the public will be at the end of March!
Next time you find yourself on the Northern Beaches, we highly recommend popping into The Ivanhoe for a bite and a drink.—you won’t be disappointed!

Whether it’s your first Aussie Day (January 26th) or if it’s your 30th, there is absolutely no reason not to get involved.
There are so many cool activities taking place across this lil’ ol’ country that we call home.
When I first arrived in Sydney four years ago on the 23rd January, I had no idea that there even was an Australia Day, no less when it was! Little did I know that it was in 3 days time, and that it would be one of the best days of my travels yet!
Back in 2009, we started at Hyde Park with a crate of Pure Blonde, then we headed to The Australian Hotel in The Rocks. We then ended our day watching the fireworks at Darling Harbour – they were spectacular!
I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of it before! So here is a little gift from me to you, to let you decide how your perfect Australia Day will be spent:
1. Bronte Beach BBQ (all day)
Avoid the hustle and bustle of the city and head to the quaint Eastern Suburbs beach between Bondi and Coogee. It is one of the few places where you’re allowed to drink in the open and it has grass, sand and BBQs to complete a relaxing day at the beach.
2. The Rocks – Glenmore and The Australian Heritage Hotel (all day)
This was suggested by one of Sydney Social 101′s Facebook fans as a ‘must-see’ for Australia Day – You can enjoy Emu and Kangaroo pizzas at The Australian, then wander a mere 20 metres to The Glenmore for spectacular Sydney Harbour views. A great option if the weather isn’t 100% as The Glenmore now has a retractable roof to ensure that rain, sun or hail, you can enjoy a schooner with a view!
3. Bondi Rocks – North Bondi (12pm til late)
If you fancy a lively day with beer, sounds and shapes, head to Bondi Rocks in North Bondi – One for all the hipsters (or wanna be) out there!
4. Festival of the Voice – The Rocks (12pm – 8pm)
A great suggestions by another SS101 Facebook groupies
They advised their pick would be to head to The Rocks this Australia Day for a free celebration of music and song.
There is also a twilight concert with Australian artists in Dawes Point Park. Again you’ll be able to take advantage of stunning Harbour views.
There are also concerts at First Fleet Park and ‘Song Street’ (George Street). If you’re talented with regards to vocal gymnastics, you can even make sweet music on the karaoke stage in The Rocks Square.
5. Darling Harbour - Australia Day Fireworks
Like I did on my first Australia Day, join thousands of people at Cockle Bay, hear an official address from the NSW Premier and witness the grand finale of Sydney’s Australia Day celebrations—an exhilarating symphony of light, sound and pyrotechnics. Perfect if you’re looking for things to do with the family!
6. Party hard with the best of them with Keystone!
Cargo Bar, Cargo Lounge, Bungalow 8 and The Loft have a list of celebrations to suit all tastes this Australia Day here in Sydney, from 25 – 28 January!
They are all hosting a four day festival at the four iconic harbour-side venues on King Street Wharf! With over 50 different DJs and live acts, plus activities, games and more, ‘Oz Fest’ is a celebration of Australian icons with all the jam-packed excitement and entertainment of a festival! Including Minx She Can DJ tour, Sosueme DJs, Strummer & heaps more!
Sweethearts Rooftop Bar is hosting Aussie celebrations from 25 – 28th January! There will be $5 tinnies and great Aussie food ALL WEEKEND
The Sugarmill will be hosting a massive Australia Day party across four floors from 10pm – Kings Cross

Gazebo – 26th January from 12pm
Peter Allen Party with DJs from 4pm, celebrations from 12pm for a massive AustraliaDay Celebration.
Manly Wine – 26th January from 3pm

7. Rave the night away at Pacha at The Ivy – Saturday 26 January from 6:30pm!
Now there are no doubt many events and activities I have missed out – If you have any suggestions, please post a comment below!
Hope you all have the best Australia Day ever!

Here at Sydney Social 101 we certainly are gearing up for what is set to be a fabulous, fun-filled long weekend!
Tonight we’re off to Cantina and Corner Bar in Balmain as guests to sample the amazing news menus! Full reviews to follow over the weekend – we’ve been told to look out for the Espresso Martini at Corner Bar and a Twisted Margarita at Cantina Bar as they are the way to go apparently! Sounds like a plan!
Tomorrow is just as action filled! At 12:30pm we’re heading off to Bucket List for a reservation to sample the lunch menu for Spring, with perfect panoramic views of Bondi beach, and uber crowd and beers on tap – we can’t imagine that we’ll be disappointed!
Following on from Bucket List, we’ve been invited to review The Island Bar on Cockatoo Island – which is renowned for its harbour views and yummy cocktails, my biggest highlight however is the water taxi over to the venue – life’s small pleasures hey, ha! Sydneysiders and visitors can enjoy Harbour Bridge views from iconic Cockatoo Island, just a 12 minute ferry-ride from the city, in the comfort of an exclusive custom-designed bar space with great drinks and food, and cocktails served either by the glass or in jugs perfect for sharing on a warm afternoon. If you’re keen to head this weekend, check out the website: http://www.theislandbar.com.au/
To complete an action packed Saturday, Sydney Social is heading back to our Manchester roots and celebrating all things Northern Soul as we head to Hard Rock Cafe as part of the Soul Weekender celebrations. If this is your bag and you want to catch up with like-minded people, check out this link here
On Sunday Sydney Social, along with half of the Eastern Suburbs is descending into Manly to celebrate a Monday off work! First port of call is Manly Wine as they have a chocolate wheel at the venue all weekend – hello please!
We’ll also be swinging by 4Pines, we LOVE their own brews and will be sampling the following in celebration of Oktoberfest Fest – German Pils 5.2% | 42 IBU’s, Märzen 5.2% | 23 IBU’s, Dunkelweizen 4.8% | 17 IBU’s and Doppelbock 7.2% | 21 IBU’s.
Another Manly FAVE is In Situ, the most amazing cocktails, live acoustic performances and chilled out crowd, if you’re heading manly-side – pop this on your hit list, stat!
However if you’re heading this side of the bridge (bt this side I mean East J), there are some great celebrations at Gazebo at Potts Point. They plan to transform the already quirky and beautiful Gazebo into a celebration reminiscent of Gene Wilder’s chocolate factory, complete with chocolate fountain and three-course bubblegum*.Held over the entire October long weekend, this promises to be an amazing event for young and old. There will be a chocolate fountain (YUM!) Fri – Mon, a chocolate installation will be installed staff dressed in purple themed outfits.
There will be a few chocolate inspired beverages – one where the bar staff will use the chocolate fondue. We will also have the chocolate wheel spinning all weekend!
Over in Surry Hills, The Winery will be celebrating all things Surry Hills! For three whole days! Street art! Fashion! Food! Wine! Stay!
All in all, you simply have no excuse to not go out and get involved!
Happy Long Weekend everyone! Have a good en’ and stay safe x

Pure Bier lovers need not fear the return to the daily grind, with Monday night Bier Flights aiding you back into the working week – $10 gets you a selection of specially imported and specialty Bavarian Pure Biers.
Tuesdays
Think you can slam down a mega pork schnitzel? The ultimate Löwenschnitzel eating challenge will stretch bellies across Sydney on Tuesday night, with a bier on the house if you get to the last gulp.
Wednesdays
Pure Bier taste challenges will test the most hoppy taste buds on a Wednesday night, pitching Pure Bier against your, ahem, ‘standard’ Aussie beers (not biers).
Thursdays
Thursdays will see the return of the Bier Akademies, run by Bavarian Bier Café’s own Bier Meisters who will be teaching bier lovers everything they need to know about Pure Bier.
Fridays
Bier & Beats featuring DJ music will get patrons in the mood to wind down the working week on Fridays.
As well as offering great food and bier deals, each Bavarian Bier Café will challenge bier aficionados to become ‘The Man’ or ‘The Woman’. Over the Pure Bier Fest guests can participate in a challenge and earn tallies against their name on the Bavarian Bier Café blackboard. At the end of the Pure Bier Fest, the winning Man or Woman at each location will receive an invitation into the Stein Club, an exclusive invite only bier club, and the accolade of their name represented on a stein in the venue.
Bier enthusiasts will delight in the range of Bavarian biers on offer. Whether you’re a traditionalist Löwenbräu Original devotee or if you’re enticed by the more subtle tropical flavours of Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Hell, there’s a bier on offer to tantalise all tastes for the amber liquid.
Bavarian Bier Café Managing Director, John Szangolies says: “Pure Bier Fest is a celebration of authentic, premium Bavarian Bier. It gives our patrons an opportunity to appreciate the quality ingredients and heritage of Bavarian Bier. Most importantly, we aim to put on a fun month where our guests can enjoy great food and bier while joining in the Pure Bier Fest spirit.”

Plans for this weekend?
We have it each week, there it literally so much to do in Sydney that each weekend is fully booked about two month in advance – what I feel is important however is to not fall into the trap of doing the same thing every single weekend. There are so many amazing suburbs out there, which are host to many a hidden/ relatively unknown bar.
Each week I’m going to do a ‘Suburb in the Spotlight’ this week its Manly. Rather than go for the obvious, I’m going to profile the ‘lesser-known bars’ that remain the suburbs best kept secrets… until now…
This week the spotlight is on Manly
Manly is one of Australia’s most renowned beaches, but lovers of the outdoors, food-lovers, bar-hoppers and shopaholics will know there’s much more to this iconic Sydney suburb than just surf and sand.
Here is a profile of some of the bars that you should check out if you’re planning on visiting this stunning , seaside suburb.
Miss Marley’s
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before, I used to be a cocktail bar tender in my Manchester days. I loved it, great team, free alcohol and I loved knowing how to make a balanced cocktail with just the right amount of sugar syrup and lime juice. It also didn’t hinder the attention from the guys either, there seems to be something about bar staff and their desirability stakes shooting up the scale as they serve you a cocktail, shaken but not stirred (over crushed ice).
A seven can become and eight and a four can even become a respectable six, how does this happen?
So I was contacted by the lovely guys at Miss Marley’s in Manly with regards to its Cocktail Masterclass which they pitch as a great introduction into the art of mixology & the background of its Pan American drinks menu.
Get involved
They advise that their highly experienced & award winning bartenders will guide you & your group through the elements of this art, from its origins & history to the tricks of the trade.
Demonstrating two of Miss Marley’s most popular cocktails, the Margarita & one of our exquisite in house creations, then a Grand Finale “The Cocktail Cup” where you get a chance to create a future classic & they are the judge!
The Masterclass is for groups of 8-16 guests. Perfect for hens parties, networking, team building events or simply to show off at your next dinner party!
A selection of delicious canapés are served throughout…
You can expect to get involved, be inspired, in great spirit & in the know!

The Cantinero
From the team that brought us Miss Marley’s tequila bar, comes a Mexican cantina just around the corner.
Tequila & Taco’s
The boss, The owner, The main man. The Cantinero – In Mexico you will find Cantinas all over the country, The Cantinero, is the owner of these fine establishments!
Cantinero is soon to be the talk of the town. In a Manly first, the team from recently nominated “Australian Small Bar of the Year 2011 Miss Marley’s” & Tequila Tromba of Mexico, have opened a “pop up / take over” bar concept
Where they transform local favourite, Ground Zero coffee house into a secret hideaway Cantina style venue by night. The Intriguing & ambient space with it’s lantern lined entrance leading to the intimate dining room & large outside terrace area is sure to get local movers and shakers buzzing for the coming summer nights.
Jumping on the bandwagon of the Mexican street style taco & botana craze sweeping Sydney right now.
Cantinero exec chef Lupita Manzo Moreno brings a wealth of “real mexican” flavour & tradition spins it around & delivers big flavour with a fresh, light modern twist on the ever popular street cuisine of Mexico. Cantinero serves up delicious taco’s and botanas for the more discerning of diners who are looking for a difference when it comes to Mexican as we know it.
Alongside the food will of course be Tequila! Recently launched premium Tequila Tromba will be the focus of the drinks menu with a small list of “must have cocktails & signature serves”.

4 Pines
4 Pines is a brewery come bar that is located opposite Manly Wharf, they have their own ales and they are amazing in my opinion! It has a great atmosphere and is regularly host to acoustic/ band performances from local Aussie talent.
Choices include their pale ale, kolsch and (my bessie fave) heferweizen. From Mondays to Thursdays, the cinema and bar have a deal where for $33.00 you get a main meal in the 4 Pines restaurant and a movie ticket, while Mondays is ‘Monday Madness’ where you have the option of Mussels or Spaghetti & Meatballs + Pint for $20. There is also live music every Monday kicking off from 7:30pm.
It is a nice alternative to Manly Wharf and provides a more laid back ambience, perfect for a date or drinks with your friends. The balcony provides a perfect suntrap between the hours of 2 – 6, so if you’re wanting some al fresco drinking/ dining - this is a great shout!
If you’re looking for something to do this Valentines, they have a great Mr and Mrs event taking place, further details below:
