I had seen the same trailer for this film a number of times, each time I got more excited to see the final product. I hoped this would be a funny film that reached the same level of comedy as Anchorman or 40 Year Old Virgin. Did it live up to my hopes??
The film is about two lonely young boys who become best friends over a love of magic. Years later they grow up to become Burt Wonderstone, (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton, (Steve Buscemi).
Their shows become bigger and bigger until they finally have centre stage in the grandest casino in Vegas. All is not well as they two start to drift apart over their repetitive boredom of the same tricks each night and Burt’s big headedness. In the meantime there is a new street magician Steve Gray, (Jim Carey), who is performing daring street magic. Soon the friendship breaks and they need to find a way back to the top.
It is obvious that Burt and Anton are taking off Siegfrid & Roy, while Steve Gray is meant to be Chris Angel. There are other nods to magicians like David Blaine. Carell and Buscemi are a great double act even if they don’t look like a great pairing. Carey is back to the Carey we all know, and some may love, with other the top acting, after all that’s what he is best for. He does steal the show with some outrageous over the top tricks, which I wont spoil. The first one will turn a few stomachs. The main characters are back by Olivia Wilde, Burt & Anton’s assistant (Amazing), and Alain Arkin, Burt’s magician mentor. Both characters add a lot of humour outside of the main three.
A lot of the film is predictive but most are in this genre. It is the constant jokes that you would expect from comedians of this calibre that keep the film going. I’ve noticed with a lot of comedy films recently that the jokes start to slow down about half way through as if they are out of steam, not here!!
If anyone is a fan of Steve Carell or Jim Carey, then this is them at their best and you wont be disappointed. No its not an Anchorman or 40 Year Old Virgin, but this is definitely a film I would love to see again for an abundance of funny stand out moments. I haven’t heard a cinema audience laugh out loud for so long.

Who’s your money on? Why??
Good luck to all the nominees!!
Back for it’s 21st installment, Australia’s largest short film festival Tropfest had a stellar line-up of talent and celebrity guests yesterday!
This year, taking to the black carpet was a host of Aussie superstars, including Hollywood heavyweight Sam Worthington, who was one of this year’s judges.
The ‘Clash of the Titans’ star, who won ‘Best Actor’ at the ‘2000 Tropfest festival’ for his role in short film ‘A Matter of Life’, revealed to the media beforehand what he was looking out for while judging.
“The thing I want to see is how the films connect with the audience,” he confided.
Also attending the bash as judges, was ‘Packed to the Rafter’s’ Rebecca Gibney, ‘Kath and Kim’ star Magda Szubanski and actor Richard Roxborough.
The traditional signature item in each film this year was a balloon, and the story lines in each flick were original, ranging from water fights to time travel or milkshake bombs and many other themes portrayed in the 16 finalist clips.
The official event was held yesterday at The Domain in Sydney, with live sites set up across the country in Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Wollongong, Hobart and Surfers Paradise.
The winner of the evening was Nick Clifford for his masterpiece ‘We’ve All Been There’, about a pregnant waitress who is down on her luck. Nick scored himself the top prize with a heap of goodies as well as a trip to LA for a week of meetings with film industry directives.
An impromptu award was created by ‘Avatar’ star Worthington yesterday, who offered $3000 for best personality in a feature. He handed this to Sydney Pensioner and dancing busker Raymond Borzelli, who appeared in Jefferson Grainger’s film ‘Better Than Sinatra’, which came in second place.
For more information on winners, check out the official website now – http://tropfest.com/au/

So as you can see there is PLENTY to choose from! Hope you have a simply wonderful day and celebrate it with those that mean the most to you!
The day that they call Valentines Day is almost upon us, on the 14th February couples, singles and friends and family use this opportunity to tell their loved ones just how much they mean to them.
From experience I have found that there is definitely a split opinion when it comes to Valentines Day Celebrations. They usually come in the following two categories:
Haters
These people believe that there shouldn’t be just one day that you are forced to, by society, to proclaim your undying love to your partner, friends and family. They often refer to it as a ‘Hallmark Holiday’. They feel that you should be able to make grand gestures ‘just because’, not just because it’s Valentines Day, and well that’s the done thing…
Singles also fall into this category, these singles hate romance being paraded in front of them. They ask for the ‘sick bag’ and they’ll probably arrange an ‘anti-Valentines’ evening – Cue takeaway, horror/ comedy DVD and the rest of their single/ anti-Valentines loved up friends.
Then there’s the:
Lovers
This category of people love everything there is to love about Valentines, they love what it stands for, they love any excuse for a grand gesture and embrace it with both arms and share the love. They’ll book/ cook a special meal for their nearest and dearest, they’ll have flowers delivered to their respective other’s workplace and they’ll probably splash out on an expensive gift.
Singles also fall into this category too – they might go to all lengths to bag a date as they don’t like to be alone on Valentines Day. They might even want to celebrate the ‘day of love’ with their best friends and toast all that Valentines Day stands for in their minds – A day to show how much you love your friends and family. If grand gestures can be celebrated anytime, why not today?!
I have been guilty of falling into all of the above categories at some point in my life. What I can say is that I do believe that you should be able to show your loved ones how much they mean to you anytime sure, however I do think then why not celebrate Valentines Day? The day of love, romance and grand gestures – seems like the perfect time for me. (I’m of the school of thought, that if you want to do big romantics acts at anytime of year, then do! Just because you choose to do one on Valentines Day too, doesn’t use up your quota!)

Spending a day on the water, leaping from a plane or learning to cook a killer soufflé are some of the top ways we choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, according to online experience retailer redballoon.com.au.
After selling more than 1.7 million experiences in just over a decade, RedBalloon is a popular choice for the loved-up wanting to celebrate February 14 in a romantic or adventure-fuelled fashion.
Top Valentine’s Day experiences in 2012:
1. Sailing
2. Eating out and cooking classes
3. Massages, beauty and spa treatments
4. V8 and rally car experiences
5. Skydiving
RedBalloon customer Sheri Gould was one who opted for the skydiving option, proposing to her boyfriend Max after leaping from 14,000 feet on Valentine’s Day last year.
As part of a daredevil skydive proposal arranged by RedBalloon, Sheri surprised Max with a skydiving experience – little did he know Sheri was taking the biggest leap of her life.
“I was very nervous as we boarded the plane – I had to jump first so that I could be on the ground and on one knee ready to pop the question when Max landed,” Sheri said.
“There was a huge banner reading ‘Will you marry me?’ laid out on the ground as Max came into land, and a film crew capturing the moment for TV.
“It was a real logistical and emotional exercise. But when he said yes it was the happiest moment of my life.”
Sheri and Max plan to wed in Sydney this year.

Sydney Social 101 hopes that you all have an amazing Valentines Day, no matter what you decided to do! We hope this guide has provided you with some inspiration with regards to gifts!
COMING UP: Where to celebrate Valentines Day – Sydney venues to spoil the one you love…
Hey sweetheart, now that this old dive is closing up… I know of a swingin’ new place. Some guy told me about it a few days ago, he said it was a hip honky-tonk with it’s door all hidden up behind one of them hot dog joints? And the hot dogs aren’t half bad either, he says – anyway, whaddaya say sweetheart? I’ll buy you a gin soda, take you for a dance…
It’s a warm midnight and the pavement is slick from a passing summer shower. The lights have gone up and it’s time to move on, but this ol’ suburb has been kicking off its heels and crawling in to bed or wandering further abroad… up until now.
A phoney fifties’ coke machine makes a secret entrance to a space you’d never expect: welcome to The Soda Factory, Surry Hills’ newest late-night sweet spot. They’ve stripped out the Mars Lounge, Tone and all that fleshy interior to present the stunning industrial bones of this beautiful old building, and there’s a top-notch cocktail menu to match.
And with it’s late-trading license, The Soda Factory will have the tunes sorted. Expect a regular offering of live acts, international DJ’s & local vibe controllers to engineer your nights from chill in the early evening to some sweet, sweet d-floor action later on, expect to leave early… if you know what we mean.
Bar owner and Experience Entertainment Director, Graham Cordery says, “Surry Hills is one of the most diverse and trendy suburbs in the world, but when it comes to late night offerings, there’s been something missing.”
He knows how to make a place work, too: with Experience Entertainment at the helm of ivy’s weekly shindigs for the last 2.5 years and bringing home AHA’s Best Entertainment Venue two years in a row, his standards for a good night out are understandably pretty darn high.
“Just like Surry Hills, there’s going to be a little bit of something for everyone when we open our doors.”
Joining Cordery’s wealth of experience in the electronic music scene, partner Michael Chase brings a world of experience in live music acts to the table, mastering the delicate confluence of old-school classics and contemporary beats, from Buddy Holly to Dangermouse. Chase’s background at MGM Distribution paints a picture of one of the most well-respected names in the music industry – and with that clout comes some serious pulling power.
Aside from big names, early evening punters might be treated to some select live sets. “The live music component will also try to support some of the best up-and-coming and indie talents out there,” Chase explains. “Earlier in the night or mid-week nights we’d love to get some great acoustic sets on.”
At this bar & music venue, the stage will find itself under the feet of the coolest touring bands and exclusive guest DJs. This exciting hybrid of bar & creative space boasts a first for Sydney, evoking the experience of a smoky late night New York club. That’s how you’ll find New York’s DJ SPINNA manning the decks for the launch party on Saturday 23rd February and the legendary Grandmaster Flash a few weeks later.
But don’t worry if you left your dancing shoes at home: you’ll still find a spot at the bar to suit, with a drinks menu designed by mixologist Mitchell Warters, straight from London. He’s spent the last two years perfecting the art of the delicious drop at Richard Branson’s exclusive members-only Roof Gardens cocktail bar on High Street, LDN. But rather than a traditional serving of spirits and classic cocktails, Warters will be creating some unique and exciting signature drinks for The Soda Factory to complement the old school atmosphere.
Warters’ philosophy is all about flavour-focused, accessible, unpretentious cocktails with an adventurous streak, but not too intimidating. His playful approach to cocktails includes nostalgic numbers like root beer floats with gourmet ice cream and switched out bubbles (like raspberry lemonade and vodka ice cream). The pina colada and martini get new twists, too. A focus on quality will bring you a more ‘adult’ selection of organic vodka, lychee, ruby red grapefruit and sage, or pepper tequila, basil, strawberry and cranberry juice.
The soda syphon will also make a triumphant return with a boozy makeover, serving up share cocktails of sparkling apple and rum as well as gin and lemonade and similar classic pairings. 12 classic cocktails, 12 original cocktails and late-night service: there should be no shortage of delicious dance-floor lubrication going on at this hip new bar.
For those ones in the know, The Soda Factory will offer the highest quality entertainment and beverages in a wonderfully central location, long into the night and beyond.
So whether you stop for a nightcap hot dog at Bobby’s Boss Dogs – the fast food joint that conceals this hidden gem – or pass through it as you wander out in the early morning glow, there’s a secret spot waiting for you at the bottom end of Surry Hills – but don’t just go telling everyone, alright? Shh, it’s just this way…

I have no doubt Australia will take Legally Blondeinto their hearts as well and have an Elle of a party at the theatre. I am thrilled that Legally Blonde The Musical, the success story from Broadway and London has come to Australia, and that I am producing it with John Frost in our first collaboration.”
John Frost is excited to be co-producing Legally Blonde. “This show is 100% pure entertainment, and I know Sydney will fall in love with the show as much as I have. I’m delighted to be working with Howard Panter for the first time, and to be presenting my third major musical in 2012 at the beautiful Lyric Theatre.”
