I was invited to see the advanced screening on Tim Burton’s new movie, ‘Dark Shadows’ starring Johnny Deep – swoon!!
I was expecting a comedy following a trailer I’d seen recently and was looking forward to a giggle fest! Predictably Helena Boham-Carter was cast alongside Depp. It can’t be denied that they do work very well together and complement each other massively; I do sometimes wish however that Burton would cast others in the leading roles.
Depp dons pale skin again and a dramatic costume for his role as Barnabas Collins. He doesn’t disappoint in the role, in a somewhat clunky storyline that has red herrings all over the place, he holds the narrative together as you remember whilst you’re watching.
Johnny Lee-Miller’s character, Roger Collins is somewhat redundant in the scheme of the story and adds a layer that you’d like to get to know more as a viewer that is somewhat distracting.
Over all it’s a great bit of escapism and definitely packs a few one-liners in there to tickle you!
In a nutshell, Barnabas falls victim to the wrath of a witch that experiences unrequited love – who damns him to a life as the un-dead – a vampire. After being buried alive for 200 years, Barnaby is exhumed from his living grave by accident and returns to the mansion that he and his father built some 200 years ago. The story unfolds as Barnabas works to rebuild his father’s empire whilst combating the Twenty First Century and all of the technological advancements (a part of the story that I feel could have been played up to further comical effect).
